On the road to Nouadhibou after our first off-road excursion, which was over a picturesque minefield in the no-man's-land between Morocco and Mauritania. Sister Frankie, our group mentor, took the honour of being the first to get stuck in sand. The border crossing was slow but relatively painless and inexpensive. The guards threw down their rifles halfway through proceedings to take a prayer break; smugglers should note that this is the perfect time to illegally enter Mauritania.

Our first steps into the Sahara reveal that the CliveMobile's three-inches of ground clearance just aren't enough.

We're following teams Porridge Cannons, Sandgropers, and Straight Outta Chorlton. You can just make out the 'desert throne' of the Porridge Cannons on their roofrack - a plastic garden chair was acquired, and a large hole cut in the seat using an intense beam of pure genius, to create the perfect desert bowel-relief accessory.

The CliveMobile looking damn cool in the desert as we wait for the deceased car of team FUBAR to be recovered. Their name turned out to be entirely fitting as their colourful steed was ditched the following morning following a number of nocturnal revival attempts.

CE strikes a desert pose, as Jules from team Porridge Cannons gets horticultural.

Our first camp in the desert, about half a day's drive from where we ought to have been.

The CM loves it. You can just about see some roving camels in the background.

We eat the Porridge Cannon's dust in a deep sandy section. If you slow down in bits like this, you get horribly stuck with no hard ground to be towed out from. Plenty of sideways action results.

RD, here in "Gay Mears" guise, gets himself some camel.

The Magnificent Seven: (right to left) "Straight Outta Chorlton", "Porridge Cannons", SCR, "Desert Gropers", "Dynamo Madame Sepia", "Gaffers" and "Pugh Pugh Barney McGrew Ian Darren and Pete". "Tantric Tools" bring up the rear as they temporarily join our trunkin' convoy.

Sister Frankie surveys a camel.

Our desert guide, Chek "Slaowly" Fal, expresses his love for the CliveMobile in physical terms.

A big bit of desert.
