July 29th 2006. Rising at a damp and unpleasant 6am, SCR pack up camp and cheese it to Volgograd, arriving at 2:30 with no no problems aside from yet another police robbery, this time for failing to slow down enough at a checkpoint. Rich adjusts the price from 130 to 20 dollars. They check into the grand Hotel Volgograd.

Entirely rebuilt after WW2 under the watchful gaze of Stalin, complete with 'historic' architecture, Volgograd is a strange place today. Westernisation does not sit easily in streets designed around Stalin's modern socialist ideal, and the tacky modern shop-fronts look awful in the grand buildings and wide squares.

After manfully chomping through plates of decidedly slimy cow tongue in a cafe (an accidental selection), SCR are taken to a rock bar with a distinctly English vibe by a couple of friendly local musicians. During much drinking of beer, they are introduced to Gleb, a local radio sports commentator, TV news presenter, and all-round legend.
