August 8th 2006. Before paying one final visit to the police station at 2:00, SCR go shopping for essential items stolen from the cab. Slava their cab driver is amazingly helpful, and after ferrying them from shop-to-shop, collects two mechanic friends to help with the disabling of the vehicle's ignition lock (they are proudly told that this is a Russian speciality).

When they arrive, the cab is covered in tree limbs and wrapped in audio tape, much to the amusement of all locals, who laugh like bears when Sam mutters 'Russian boys'.

The pair are dogged by TV crews throughout, later appearing on a further three Russian news programmes. The media have a knowledge of their movements that borders on the clairvoyant - their first ambush occurs in a tool shop some distance from the town centre to which they have travelled in an incongruous Lada Samara taxi.

They eventually escape the ill-mannered city at 4:00 and head into the countryside with much elation. Less than three hours later, the world goes Cubist as a stone shatters the CC's windscreen into 10,000 impending shards. They carefully remove the limp item in nearly one piece using much sellotape and bin bags to catch spiky escapees, and locate a place to camp dejectedly.
