August 11th 2006. Sans clock, SCR rise when sun strikes faces and continue along uninspired roads to Barnaul, arriving in early evening. The town is the first that is appears on the original RRR itinerary, and they are three days late.

They take a confused route to the town's Prospect Lenina, locate the obligatory grand square c/w statue of the bearded man himself, dismount, and are delighted to be greeted by Ann and Howard of team Skip Rats, who made their escape from Kazakhstan the previous day. Their hotel is beyond the reaches of the Clive Bank, so they head for 'Hotel Altay', a cheap and relatively cheerful establishment of the faded glory variety with the first hot showers since Volgograd.
